Acqua Expert introduces the Respirômetro to the Brazilian market
New equipment can reduce energy consumption by up to 50% in biological wastewater treatment plants.
Acqua Expert – Engenharia Ambiental was founded in 2017 to address a gap in the wastewater treatment sector. “The market had a gap in biological wastewater treatment. So, Acqua Expert was created to provide efficient, sustainable environmental engineering solutions aligned with current regulations,” says Ana Luiza Fávaro, founder and CEO of the company.
For IFAT 2025 – International Fair for Water, Sewage, Drainage and Waste Recovery Solutions, Acqua Expert’s technological innovation for the sector is the Respirômetro, an equipment that online measures the oxygen consumption of bacteria within biological wastewater treatment plants, as well as BOD levels, nitrification, denitrification, and toxicity. “The Respirômetro has two algorithms: SICTOX and SICAIR. The first links toxicity results to the bypass pump at the entrance of the biological treatment,” explains Fávaro.”In this way, it is possible to separate the toxic effluent so that the bacteria in the system are not harmed. With SICAIR, which is connected to the air blowers, we can regulate the exact amount of oxygen needed for the bacteria to consume organic matter and other substances, such as ammoniacal nitrogen,” emphasizes Fávaro.
Due to its precise oxygen control, the executive emphasizes that the Respirômetro can generate savings of up to 50% in energy costs for biological wastewater treatment plants, as the system adjusts the air dosage to exactly what the microorganisms need.
Acqua Expert also offers personalized training, consulting, and advisory services designed to guide the proper management of effluents, allowing clients to focus on their core operations. “Our training program is our flagship. We have two categories: Activated Sludge Operation and Activated Sludge Microbiology. The training can be offered in two formats, in-person and online. In the online format, the classes are recorded, and students have 24/7 access for 3 months to watch the lessons,” highlights Fávaro.
The director, a biologist by training with a specialization in microorganisms of the activated sludge system, mentions that the majority of her clientele consists of industries in the pulp and paper sector, but the company also provides solutions for businesses with low flow and challenging waste loads. “We have the Effluent Treatment System for Reuse, designed for the treatment of sanitary sewage and for companies with effluents that have a high load of waste to be treated,” she concludes.
